Harley Pasternak, Fitness Expert Behind the ONE Mission Bay Fitness Center
Meet celebrity trainer and nutritionist Harley Pasternak, the creative force behind the fitness center at ONE Mission Bay.Â Paternak has a vast background in all things exercise;Â he holds a Master of Science in Exercise Physiology and Nutritional Sciences from the University of Toronto and an Honors Degree in Kinesiology from University of Western Ontario. He is also certified by The American College of Sports Medicine and The Canadian Society of Exercise Physiology, and served as an exercise and nutrition scientist for Canadaâ€™s Department of National Defense.
A New York Times Bestselling Author, Harley has trained many celebrities including Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Halle Berry, Katy Perry, Megan Fox, Robert Downey Jr., Robert Pattinson, Jessica Simpson, Ke$ha, Hilary Duff and Jennifer Hudson.

What inspired you to begin a career in fitness?
I guess I grew up during the Reagan era where every male role model was either named Schwarzenegger, Stallone, or Van Damme. So, when my mother took me to a Y to work out when I was 12 years old, I was hooked right away. Â I wanted to look like my favorite movie stars.
Describe the design philosophy behind the fitness center at One Mission Bay:
The philosophy behind the fitness center design at ONE Mission Bay is versatility meets creativity meetsÂ simplicity.
First and foremost we really wanted to focus on Bestin class. You’ll notice the facility is not just one brand of equipment, rather a combination of a few brands each that specialize in certain styles of training.Â The choice of equipment allows the versatility of pursuing countless styles of training while allowing the user unlimited creativity without too much clutter or overly and unnecessarily complex equipment. We streamlined the kind of exercise equipment and modalities while incorporating some of the more traditional forms of exercise i.e. free weights.
What are your five favorite features?
1. I love the layout in the views. Being close to the water and having a long voluminous space creates an amazing feeling of openness while allowing for different areas to cater to different forms of exercise.
2. The hoist rocket resistance line: The biomechanics allow you to work your muscles in a way that very few pieces of select your eyes equipment can.
3. The combination of cardio we have. From Precor treadmills, ellipticals, AMT, and cycles toÂ Stairmaster step Mills, he looks lateral trainer, and the next versus boxing machine.
4. We have so many different Bestin class forms of cardio people will never get bored.
5. I really love the functional corner we have with the Precor queenax unit and all of the latest accessories to keep people functional through their exercise experience.
Describe the top 3 fitness technology trends or apps that have caught your eye over the last several years:
I’m a big fan of Fitbit. It’s completely revolutionized the way I interact with my clients and take care of my own health. It allows me to keep track of how many steps I take a day, how many calories I burn, my heart rate, and my duration and quality of sleep. It’s also an excellent food log that keeps track of my micro and macro nutrient totals per day.
Instagram is actually a fantastic app that helps people be exposed to creative forms of exercises and fantastic recipes that they can incorporate into their healthy lifestyles.
I’m a big fan of the helix lateral trainer. It’s a great piece of innovative fitness technology that allows you to do cardio on the lateral plane strengthening your inner and outer thighs as well as your hips and glutes.
Outside of the fitness center, what would your active lifestyle include?
There are four daily behaviors that you really need to execute every day excluding the gym. You need to hit at least 10,000 steps a day, sleep at least seven hours of quality sleep at night, unplug from technology at least an hour a day, and eat protein and fiber five times a day. These are all the habits from my most recent book 5 pounds.Â

Â A pair of new balance of Vazie training shoes, my fit bit, a bottle of Smart water to stay hydrated, simply protein bar for a snack after my workout, and deodorant.
